Using Robotics to Detect Corrosion Under Insulation

Interested in new ways to conduct inspections for corrosion under insulation (CUI)? On Tuesday, March 21, Chase David (Gecko Robotics) will provide an overview on using robotics for CUI inspections.

David’s hour-long presentation will focus on nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques to detect CUI in the field. CUI is corrosion that occurs in the base metal of storage tanks, pressure vessels, and other assets when moisture penetrates the outer insulation. Corrosion and damage to the insulation are difficult to detect without the costly process of removing insulation and performing a manual inspection.

However, with recent developments in robotics-based NDT techniques, internal inspections reveal CUI without the need for expensive scaffolding or removing insulation. Through high-definition, color-coded corrosion maps, owner/operators can pinpoint CUI in the base metal and make data-driven asset maintenance and insulation repair decisions.

This presentation takes place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday in AMPPiTheater 1 in the Exhibit Hall.
