‘Confined Space’ Workshop Highlights Safety Standard

By Lisa Sciortino, Managing Editor of CoatingsPro Magazine

The hazards of working in confined spaces are numerous. From exposure to poor air quality and extreme temperatures to the risk of falls and engulfment due to improper entry and exit procedures, the potential of serious injuries or death increases without strict adherence to established safety standards.

Scheduled from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. local time on Monday, March 16 in room 360DE, the “OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1200 Confined Space Entry for Construction Workshop (PRES2026-00019)” aims to educate facility owners, contractors, coatings inspectors, safety personnel, and others in the construction industry about the rules and requirements for working in confined and permit-required confined spaces.

The workshop will be held inside Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center, which is hosting the 2026 AMPP Annual Conference + Expo.

Presented by Charles Brown, deputy director of coatings at GPI/Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., the workshop will break down all the implications of the standard, which emphasizes training, monitoring, evaluation, and communication requirements during operations in confined spaces.

Released in 2015 and updated in 2025, OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1200 defines and divides responsibilities on construction jobsites that ensure evaluations of confined spaces are performed, and that workers are provided with personal protective equipment and appropriate training. Although it shares similarities with the general industry confined space standard, differences between the standards exist, and these will be discussed during this informative workshop.
